Go outside and have fun your depression will go away. Wait, what? Seriously?
How convenient it is for people to have their own notions about a serious mental illness. Depression is the most misunderstood illness amongst people and it is just sad that people just don’t even bother to correct them by reading more into it.
Here are some common misconceptions about depression that might give you some clarity for now!
Yes, depression makes people low on energy which leads to loss of motivation, insomnia etc. But this occurs in depressive episodes that can last for around two weeks or more and not all the time.
2. Depression is a choice/a way to seek attention.
Seriously? In fact, it is just the opposite of choice because the pervasive feeling in a depressive episode is the loss of control of their brain and nerves. You never know if they are clinging on to you to seek a reason to live.
3. Depressive people can be spotted.
No, unless you are a trained psychologist, you can’t. Even if you see someone who is smiling or laughing could be a person with depression. Stop taking that as a joke!
4. Depression can be cured by love.
You wish. You are probably watching too much drama if you happen to believe this. Even love can’t cure depression.
5. Depressed people are weak.
Try handling one depressive episode and you’ll know. No motivation to get out of bed, insomnia, anxiety and a lot of things you and I can only imagine. And they still carry on. Perhaps, they are much stronger than you.

6. All depressed people take antidepressants.
That’s too untrue. Since some can’t afford to buy them or are allergic to them, so not all people suffering from depression take antidepressants.
7. Depression is a trend.
In fact, the more people are willing to talk about this, the more it is coming out in open.
8. Depression is a mood swing.
No depression is real and is certainly a serious problem. Not millions of people can be suffering from mood swings right?
9. Depression is caused by bad experiences or situations.
Well, it does trigger if one loses a loved one but it does not necessarily need a condition to the surface.
10. The symptoms of depression are all emotion-related.
Mostly False. It’s usually a mixture of both emotional and physical discomfort. Depression manifests in a lot of physical discomforts, including aches and pains, sleeping too much or too little, and extreme lethargy.
And no they don’t cry all the time. In fact, some people are unable to cry at all if suffering from depression.
Depression is real people. Try spreading about this mental illness and not misconceptions about it.
